La Cañada Flintridge Outlook newspaper claimed four awards and the Outlook Newspaper group won a total of 10 in the statewide journalism contest conducted by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, it was announced last weekend in Santa Monica.
Senior staff writer Mirjam Swanson’s story on Sam Farmer, the L.A. Times’ renowned NFL beat writer (Feb. 4), took first place in the Sports Feature category.
She also earned honorable mention statewide in two other categories for the Outlook’s circulation, recognized for business coverage for the story on the closing of Sport Chalet (April 21) and for environmental reporting for a feature on a quintet of former LCHS students who won a NASA hackathon (July 14).
The LCF Outlook also garnered honorable mention for its Back to School special section, a colorful, in-depth section that previewed the upcoming school year. The 42-page section was laid out by graphic designer Aisa Reyes.
These statewide honors speak to the quality that our team strives for each week when we publish our newspapers,” said Outlook Publisher Charlie Plowman. “We have a marvelous staff and it is certainly flattering — as well as humbling — to be recognized by the California judges in 10 different categories. This is truly a team effort, from our writers, to our editors, to our production department and our photographers. It is a nice tribute for their hard work and love for our profession.”
In the 2015 contest, the LCF Outlook was runner-up for a profile feature story and environmental story, and earned Blue Ribbon Finalist recognition for a sports feature.
Approximately 800 newspapers statewide are members of the California Newspaper Publishers Association; about 500 of them are weeklies. About 4,000 entries were submitted in the contest.
Outlook newspapers also won six more awards for work published in its San Marino and Pasadena editions.
In San Marino, the Outlook was first in the sports feature category and received honorable mention for a business story and a non-profile feature, as well as its Back to School special section. In Pasadena, the Outlook received a trio of honorable mentions, for a sports feature, a business story and profile feature story.
The La Cañada Valley Sun was honored as runner-up for its Sports Section.
