A La Cañada High School student was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in the crosswalk at Oak Grove Avenue and Foothill Boulevard before school on Wednesday morning, according to Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Matejka.
Three CV Sheriff’s deputies and personnel from the Pasadena Police Department responded to the incident, which Matejka said caused significant traffic congestion in front of the school. He said a traffic investigation into the cause of the incident is pending.
La Cañada Unified School District Superintendent Wendy Sinnette said the student was not seriously injured.
“[Principal] Ian [McFeat] reported that the student is OK,” Sinnette wrote in an email. “He was transported to the hospital. Labs and X-rays confirmed no serious injuries.
“Obviously,” she continued, “we take such an accident very seriously and the LCHS administration and staff will review the incident and determine if any steps can be taken to improve upon traffic and safety procedures with morning arrivals and after-school student dismissal.”
It’s the first time Matejka can remember a pedestrian being struck in front of the school, though a three-vehicle crash last November in front of LCHS sent several people to the hospital, including a motorcyclist who suffered serious injuries. No one in that incident was a student.
