The La Cañada Flintridge 8th-grade Builders Club, sponsored by the La Cañada Kiwanis, had a successful school year. The Builders Club consists of 40 students who volunteer to be part of a community service organization.
Builders Club took on five projects this year that exceeded last year’s success. The first project was Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to raise money to provide medicine, clean water, school supplies and vaccinations to help protect mothers and their children from maternal and neonatal tetanus. The students raised $1,428 over a four-week period, which turned into $2,428, thanks to a generous matching grant from the LCF Kiwanis Club.
The second project was to do various beautification projects on a Saturday at the La Cañada Flintridge Community Center.
The third project assisted the LCF Community Center’s annual food drive. Many teachers supported this program and in just two weeks, they collected approximately 300 pounds of food items, which the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station distributed to local families in need.
The fourth project was “Pennies for Patients.” Each year, Builders Club helps the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Southern California raise money to fund cancer treatment and research.
The last project helped Ascencia with the “Hygiene for Hope” campaign, collecting travel size personal hygiene items for families staying in shelters.
Information about the club, its service and meeting times, is available at lacanadakiwanis.org. The club meets every Wednesday at noon at Descanso Gardens, and new members are always welcome.
