The CIF Southern Section released its All-CIF honors list on Monday and it included athletes from La Cañada High School, Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart and St. Francis.
Two members of the LCHS boys’ basketball team and a girls’ water polo athlete earned places on the All-CIF teams. Ryan Graves was one of the best players in Division 2A, averaging 17 points and 5.11 rebounds per game. He shot 45% from beyond the arc and led the Spartans to a CIF-SS championship berth, earning him a spot on the All-CIF Division 2A first team. La Cañada fell short of winning the title, falling to Ontario Colony, 50-47.
“His three-year varsity career is one of the best at La Cañada,” said LCHS head coach Tom Hofman. “He’d be a starter if we had an all-star team. There’s nothing flashy or out of the ordinary with him. He just scores well and is a good defender. He’s very talented and doesn’t have any real weaknesses. He’s the type of player who could have stepped onto any team and made it better.”
His teammate, Zack Feehan, made the Division 2A second team after an impressive season under the rim. The forward averaged 10 points and 12.35 rebounds per game in 34 contests. Feehan smashed the program’s single-season rebounding record of 311 set by Matt Faber in 2011. Feehan finished the year with 420 rebounds.
“He stepped up and did a tremendous job for us,” Hofman said. “He’s the most improved player I have ever coached, from last year to this year.”
Standout goalie Carolyne Stern was also recognized by CIF-SS. The USC-bound Spartan is one of the top water polo players in the area, and helped LC win its fourth consecutive Rio Hondo League crown, earning her a spot on the Division 2 first team.
“She’s one of the best athletes I’ve coached,” said LCHS girls’ water polo coach Robert Echeverria. “She’s a huge presence in the goal. When you’re going into a big game and she’s in goal, you know you have a chance of winning because she rises to the occasion.”
Five Rebels were recognized by CIF-SS in three winter sports. Flintridge Prep junior Kaitlyn Chen made the Division 2A girls’ basketball first team after averaging 18.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game. Boys’ soccer standouts Silas Chavez and Spencer Harris made the Division 6 first team, and Makenna Dominguez and Mikaela Celeste earned sports on the Division 2 girls’ soccer first team. Dominguez scored 36 goals and recorded 35 assists in 23 matches, and Celeste scored 28 and finished with a team-high 43 assists.
The Flintridge Sacred Heart varsity girls’ soccer team captured the CIF State Division 3 Southern Regional championship after finishing as runner-up in the CIF-SS Division 3 title match. Senior Jillian Willis earned a spot on the first team along with teammate Madison Leroy.
Two athletes from St. Francis were among those listed by CIF on Monday. Andre Henry made the All-CIF Division 3AA boys’ basketball first team, and Luis Granados earned a spot on the Division 2 boys’ soccer first team as a goalkeeper. Granados recorded five shutouts and helped the Golden Knights finish the season with a record of 10-9-4.
Henry, a La Cañada Flintridge resident, averaged 19.3 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game and led St. Francis to a quarterfinals appearance.
“No question, the best part of Andre is the stuff he does off the court,” said St. Francis boys’ basketball coach Todd Wolfson. “He’s a 4.0 student and a great kid, the type we strive to have at St. Francis. His success comes from his work ethic and my assistant coaches. They do a great job of developing talent. They put a lot of time into Andre.”
