There was no stopping La Cañada High School quarterback Ivan Ostry. The senior put on another show last Friday and led the Spartans to 40-13 nonleague victory over host Glendale at Moyse Field.
Ostry had touchdown runs of 13, 75, 43 and 69 yards to help the Spartans improve to 2-1 on the season. The senior transfer from Rosemead tallied 264 rushing yards and also caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Macky Plocher.
“It was a good game for us,” said LCHS head coach Jason Sarceda, whose team was successful on all five two-point conversions. “The last two games, we’ve been able to get the whole team in on the action. In a season like this, it’s good to spread the ball around. We did what we needed to do offensively.”
The Spartans wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Ostry weaved his way past defenders to score the first touchdown of the game in less than two minutes.
The Nitros (0-1 overall) defense managed to contain Ostry in the first half and the offense took advantage. A touchdown pass from Juan Estrada and a 22-yard rushing touchdown from Keirson Florita kept the game within reach for the home squad, which only trailed 16-13 midway through the third quarter.
But Ostry broke through Glendale’s defense with a 43-yard touchdown run that extended the Spartans’ lead with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter. He also ran it in for a two-point conversion to put his team up 24-13.
The senior standout put the game away a 69-yard touchdown midway through the fourth. He accounted for 36 of the team’s 40 points. Justin Zoltzman and Corey Cheung each scored one of the Spartans’ five two-point conversions.
Jaime Warner recovered a pooch kick in the final quarter that set up Plocher’s touchdown pass.
Ostry credits his performance to the return of a teammate from injury.
“We definitely played hard,” he said. “We had a guy come back and that gave me rest at middle linebacker. We aligned right and did our assignments. That’s all that matters.
“I’m blessed to be out here. It’s great to get another win, but we’re now going to start focusing on the next week.”
La Cañada will host San Marino (1-1 overall) in a Rio Hondo League encounter this Friday, April 9, at 7 p.m. The Titans are coming off a 22-20 victory over South Pasadena.
