The La Cañada High School varsity football team opened Rio Hondo League action and registered its second win in as many seasons against visiting rival San Marino last Friday, 24-6, last Friday.
Junior quarterback Macky Plocher completed 19-of-29 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 50 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Senior Corey Cheung rushed for a game-high 100 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries while adding a pair of catches for 21 yards. He also posted seven tackles and an interception on defense.
Senior Anthony Venneri made five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown while collecting eight tackles and an interception on defense. Junior Cayden Klein rushed for 1 yard while producing three tackles on defense.
Junior Hayden Dancsecs had six catches for 43 yards, junior Tyler Bond had three receptions for 21 yards, and senior Trent Carey made two catches for 15 yards. Senior Jake Hofman made a 4-yard reception, while senior Royce Xiao went 3-for-3 in PAT attempts and drilled a field goal.
Sophomore Josh Carruthers registered eight tackles and an interception, while junior Anthon Cannon recorded six tackles and a sack for a loss of 6 yards. Senior Andrew Gevorgian, senior Mateo Gallegos and junior Lorenz Bayug each tallied six tackles, while senior Jake Adkins posted four tackles and a fumble recovery. Spencer Turner registered three tackles, a fumble recovery and a sack for a loss of 13 yards, junior Paulos Cucullu and sophomore Warner Ibsen each finished with two tackles, and junior Brandon Goldsby, junior Evan Craig and sophomore Scott Carey each had one tackle.
The Spartans (4-2 overall, 1-0 in league) will visit perennial powerhouse Monrovia (4-2 overall, 1-0 in league) for a crucial league game this Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.
