Film ‘7000 Miles’ Soars Above Expectations

Pioneering spirits, a lush paradise, and the gentle unraveling of a familial mystery are woven together in the newly released family-friendly movie, “7000 Miles.” The film made its world premiere before a sold-out TCL Chinese Theatre audience in Hollywood on June 24.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1970s and picturesque landscapes of Molokai, Hawaii, this film is more than just a heartwarming narrative — it’s an enchanting love letter to the island’s culture and the power of found family.
The film’s protagonist is Jo, played by Alixzandra Dove, who is a female pilot grappling with the trials and tribulations of her aviation career. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she must return home to care for her ailing grandmother, Meli, played by Wendie Malick.
Meli is an unforgettable character with an enchanting sense of whimsy. Despite the creeping tendrils of dementia, she is full of life and remains a compelling presence throughout the film. Her fragmented memories weave a rich tapestry of past and present, reality and wonder, bringing both warmth and a touch of melancholy to the narrative.
In a performance imbued with grace and sensitivity, Alixzandra Dove, a Pasadena resident, offers a mesmerizing portrayal of Jo, a woman caught at a crossroads. As she explores her grandmother’s enigmatic past, she is forced to confront the difficult choice that looms before her — should she expose Meli’s potentially illustrious legacy to revive her own faltering career, or continue her search for an uncertain future?
The true magic of “7000 Miles,” however, lies not just within the complex dynamics of its leads but also in its heartfelt homage to Molokai. The island’s untouched beauty and vibrant culture are as integral to the film as the characters themselves, enveloping viewers in a sense of community and belonging. It underscores a potent message: family isn’t just about blood ties; it’s about the connections we make and the people we find along the way.
Director Amy Glazer manages to weave the narratives seamlessly while Jim Orr’s cinematography captures the vibrant island life and the subtle, poignant emotions of the characters in equal measure. The vibrant palette of the ’70s era adds to the visual storytelling, creating an atmosphere of nostalgia that further enhances the narrative.
Brimming with warmth, wit and wonder, “7000 Miles” is a film that the entire family can enjoy. It’s a love story, a story of friendship, a story of family, and most importantly, a story of discovering one’s true self — 7,000 miles away from where you started.
