George Wallace Humphries

07/19/1929 – 07/24/2023

George Wallace Humphries, a 60-year resident of La Cañada Flintridge, passed away on July 4, 2023.
He was just 2 weeks short of his 94th birthday. George was born on July 18, 1929, in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He moved with his family to Portland, OR, as a junior at Ulysses S. Grant High School.
Following high school graduation George enrolled at the University of Oregon where he earned his B.S. degree. It was at the university where he became a proud member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Graduating in 1951 was the time for men to enter military service. George chose the U.S. Air Force and served his time. Even after his tour of duty he remained in the reserve. As a result, he earned the rank of major.
George earned a law degree in Colorado and became a member of the bar there. However, he was always interested in a round of year warmer climate. Thus, he moved to Southern California. As a member of the California Bar, he practiced law in Glendale for many years. He was always interested in giving time to local organizations. He was an active member of the Toastmasters. He became president of the Glendale Bar Association and also the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. For 52 years he was an active member and officer of the Glendale Kiwanis Club.
For many years, George attended the biennial meeting (Grand Arch Council) of his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi. His interest was very strong, and he gave many hours to this group. He eventually became vice president and later national president of Phi Kappa Psi. He had a true devotion so much that even in his later years, when a stroke disabled him, he found a way to attend the biennial meeting no matter how far away.
George is the father of Susan Wist and Mark Humphries. There are 5 grandchildren and one great-grandchild (another on the way). All those grandchildren and one great-grandchild were present at a celebration of his life. The grandchildren noted their special times with him.
George was cremated with his ashes at the Los Angeles National Cemetery. A full military ceremony took place there on August 11, 2023.
Surviving George are his former wife, Joan Humphries, and partner Janice Croft.
