La Cañada Duo Finishes Second in League Finals

La Cañada High duo Jessica Simonian and Kaylee Thornburgh secured a runner-up finish at the Rio Hondo League girls’ tennis tournament on Oct. 28, earning qualification to the CIF Southern Section Individual Championships scheduled for late November.
The pair triumphed over two San Marino doubles teams, Audrey Ranabarger and Kate Kohn (8-4), Mia Lin and Selene Yang (6-4, 6-4), to reach the title match against another Titans team, Kate Chung and Hsu. Simonian and Thronburgh settled for second, losing to Chung and Hsu by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Spartans singles player Lillian Chamras secured a third-place finish with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gwen Culbert of South Pasadena. Chamras reached the tournament semifinal after wins over Kate Trinch of Temple City (8-0) and Emily Xue of San Marino (8-0).
Chamras fell just short of the championship match after enduring a near four-hour long match against Carina Yang of San Marino in the semifinal round, ultimately falling 7-6, 5-7, 9-11.
Spartans singles player Kate Kelly was defeated by South Pasadena’s Emi Fong, 8-4. The La Cañada team of Kate Austin and Claire Lin narrowly lost to South Pasadena’s duo of Chloe Luong and Cleo Reeves with a score of 9-8. The Spartans pairing of Christina Seibert and Pauline Hess secured a victory against Monrovia’s Kaya Samuels and Izabella Anguilla with a final score of 8-3 before losing to Lin and Yang, 8-5.
The Spartans, who finished the regular season second in league with an 8-2 record (12-2 overall), opened the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs at Yorba Linda (16-3) on Nov. 1; the match ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, LCHS would advance to the second round and meet either Beckman High of Irvine (13-8) or Aliso Niguel High of Aliso Viejo (11-3) on Nov. 3.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
Flintridge Prep singles’ player Kat Zirn and doubles team Sienna Beltz and Kaitlyn Lavichant all placed fourth in the Prep League Tournament at Scholl Canyon in Glendale on Oct. 26.
Zirn was defeated by Pasadena Polytechnic’s Dora Chen, 7-5, in the third-place match. She reached the semifinals after a 6-0 victory over Polytechnic’s Juliet Lord in the quarterfinals. Emily Hsiao was eliminated in the first round, losing to Mayfield Senior of Pasadena’s Brooke Aloe, 6-3.
In the doubles matches, Beltz and Lavichant fell to Mayfield’s Phyllis Knoll and Luisa Stolpe, 6-2, in the semifinals before losing to Mayfield’s Sarah Leiva and Aurora Rago, 6-3, to finish fourth overall. Lavichant and Beltz opened the tournament with a 6-2 victory against Chadwick’s Sophie Lin and Sophia Luong. Flintridge Prep’s pair of Kara Choy and Vanessa Hsu were ousted in the first round, losing to Westridge School of Pasadena’s team of Pip De Csepel and Shania Wong, 6-3.
Flintridge Prep, which finished the regular season with an 8-2 record (12-3 overall), opened the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs by hosting Dos Pueblos High of Goleta (12-5) on Nov. 1; the match ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in the next issue. If victorious, the Wolves would advance to the second round and meet either Temecula Canyon High of Lake Elsinore (12-4) or Valencia High of Placentia (14-8) on Nov. 3.
