Baseball: La Cañada Tops Monrovia for First League Win

The La Cañada High School varsity baseball secured a 4-1 victory over visiting Monrovia in a Rio Hondo League game on March 25.
Freshman Joe Bell, who walked once and scored a run at the plate, pitched two scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Sophomore Scott Burns pitched four innings with two strikeouts and no walks, while junior Seth Larsen pitched one scoreless inning with one strikeout and no walks.
Junior Ryan Talbert registered a hit, two RBIs, a stolen base and a walk, freshman Benji Geller finished with a hit and a run, and sophomore captain Will Park tallied a base hit. Junior Cash Carroll recorded a walk, an RBI and a run, while junior captain Tyler Breckhemier walked once and scored a run.
The Spartans lost at Burroughs High in Burbank 2-1 in a nonleague game on March 21 as Bell contributed a solo home run and a walk.
Junior Flynn Lewis pitched three innings with four strikeouts, while Larsen pitched three innings with two strikeouts. Breckhemier finished with a hit and a stolen base, junior Leon Chen produced a base hit, and Geller walked once.
La Cañada suffered a 2-1 extra-inning nonleague loss at Azusa on March 19.
Bell, who had a base hit at the plate, pitched five innings with five strikeouts, while sophomore Nate Chen pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout. Talbert recorded a double and an RBI, while Breckhemier tallied a double. Park finished with a base hit, while Larsen scored a run.
The Spartans (5-5-1 overall, 1-3 in league) will host Monrovia for a league game on April 28 at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta on April 2.

ST. FRANCIS

St Francis High Schools Aaron Hernandez pitched 3 13 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to help the Golden Knights beat Loyola in a Mission League game on March 22

The Golden Knights completed the series sweep against visiting Loyola High of Los Angeles with a 3-2 Mission League victory on March 22. It was the first time St. Francis swept a league opponent since head coach Shaun Kort took over the program last season.
Aaron Hernandez pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, Kalani Quiroz, who had a double, an RBI and a run at the plate, pitched 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and no walks, and Kal-El Holguin pitched one scoreless inning. Dane Shepard slugged a two-run home run, Brody Ruyle finished with a hit, two stolen bases and a walk, and Dominik Hidalgo walked once and stole a base.
St. Francis picked up a 5-2 league victory at Loyola High on March 20 as Aiden Mahoney pitched 6 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
Jordan Lewallen recorded a triple, two RBIs, a stolen base and a walk, while Quiroz went 2-for-3 with a run. Jayden Kim produced a hit, two RBIs and a run, while Holden Deitch tallied a base hit. Jordan Viramontes, Shepard and Ruyle each walked once and scored a run, while Hidalgo walked once.
The Golden Knights routed visiting Loyola 23-3 in a league game on March 19.
Lucas Favretto pitched five innings with four strikeouts and no walks, while Callum Clark pitched two innings of relief. Lewallen went 2-for-4 with two doubles, six RBIs, three runs, two walks and a stolen base, while John Calmette went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and three runs. Viramontes slugged a three-run home run, Deitch went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, and Kim registered a double, two RBIs and a run. Hidalgo tallied a hit, three runs, two walks and an RBI, while Nick Kriebs and Shepard each contributed a hit, two runs and a walk. Landon Pure produced a hit, an RBI, a run and a walk, while Quiroz and Holguin each collected a hit and a run. JT Martin walked twice and scored a run, Ruyle walked once and scored a run, and Hernandez walked twice.
St. Francis (10-7, 5-5) will compete in the Nipomo Tournament from April 1-4 before resuming league play at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on April 9.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
The Wolves returned to action after an 11-day hiatus by visiting Rio Hondo Prep in Arcadia on March 26. The Prep League game ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue.
Flintridge Prep (5-7, 3-2) will host Rio Hondo Prep for a league game on March 28 at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Culver City on April 2.
