Descanso Gardens said it is thrilled to announce its partnership with Chef Richard Mead to introduce Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens — a unique farm-to-table dining experience.
Construction will commence in the next few weeks, with an anticipated opening in late 2024: “Farmhouse promises an unparalleled culinary experience amidst the breathtaking beauty of Descanso Gardens,” the nonprofit said in a statement.
Farmhouse will offer guests an opportunity to connect with nature while indulging in exquisite cuisine. Featuring an indoor/outdoor bar crafted from fallen trees reclaimed from the Gardens, the restaurant will provide a relaxed atmosphere for patrons to savor the wines and cocktails. Mead will showcase the bounty of California’s local farms, orchards and artisanal producers, bringing the freshest seasonal ingredients straight to the table.
“Farmhouse at Descanso will offer a truly enchanting culinary experience that intertwines the serenity of nature with the vibrant flavors of locally-sourced ingredients,” said Juliann Rooke, CEO of Descanso Gardens. “Every dish will tell a story of sustainability and farm-to-table ethos, celebrating the essence of our surroundings while delighting the palate. From the crisp greens harvested from local gardens to the savory meats sourced from nearby farms, each ingredient is thoughtfully selected to ensure a dining experience that not only nourishes the body but also nourishes the soul.”

I’m excited to create a dining experience that captures the essence of the gardens and celebrates its unique charm throughout the year.”
The menu, curated by Mead, will reflect the seasons, offering dishes that are both curated and wild, celebrating the heritage of Descanso and its collections. Whether for lunch or dinner, the Farmhouse will provide a casual yet spectacular dining experience with indoor/outdoor seating in a picturesque garden setting.
The restaurant itself will be located in the courtyard, providing a welcoming space for guests to enjoy whether they are exploring the gardens or not. Inside, the dining room will foster connection and conversation, allowing diners to observe chefs preparing their meals in the open kitchen. For those seeking a more intimate experience, the side patio will offer a private, immersive setting surrounded by lush landscapes, with tables crafted from recycled wood from Descanso Gardens’ trees.
Descanso’s horticultural staff will enhance the restaurant’s unique ambiance by crafting seasonal plant installations that evolve with the changing seasons, offering diners a dynamic and unique dining experience surrounded by nature’s beauty.
Farmhouse at Descanso will be open for lunch and dinner with a variety of seasonal events planned. It will also be available for special events of all varieties.
