Track and Field: Athletes Battle for Trip to CIF State Meet

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and the La Cañada and St. Francis high schools were represented by standout athletes at the 2024 CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Moorpark High School on May 18, with competitors hoping to earn a spot at the state event in Clovis. La Cañada is sending six athletes in five different events to compete at the CIF State Track & Field Championships at Buchanan High beginning May 24.

LA CAÑADA
In the girls’ track events, Katelyn Matarese finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 11.98 seconds. Maya De Brouwer also placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:23.19. The 4×400 relay team of Katie McGuinness, Samantha Hosford, Sarina Parks and Matarese finished sixth and shattering a 40-year-old school record with a time of 3:51.47.
In the girls’ field events, Erin Makhanian, a CIF champion, secured third in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 3 inches — a mark that was third best at the Masters Meet. McGuinness finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 18-4 1/4 and tied for 10th in the high jump, clearing 5-2.

ST. FRANCIS
Sam Franco (9:02.39) and Auge Martin (9:26.89) finished fifth and 11th, respectively, in the boys’ 3,200.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART
Julia Ihly placed second in the girls’ 100 para dash with a time of 22.44.
