First-graders in Sara Gardner’s class at Paradise Canyon Elementary School turned the story of “The Three Little Pigs” into an architecture and science activity. With the help of science teacher Kristine Babish, students planned how to build houses, decided what materials they would use and were given a $20 budget to purchase them (in school “dollars”). Using straws, tooth picks, popsicle sticks, gumdrops, marshmallows, jelly beans and foam squares, they built their houses. Using a fan, they tested the strength of their houses, which withstood the breeze. They all were excited about their accomplishments.
