La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta residents went to Facebook to shed light on a weird drone towering over their homes starting on Jan. 17.
Some Facebook users were scared that it was a person trying to scout out their home to eventually rob it, while others thought it was a drone sent by the city of Glendale.
It turns out, the drone is from Glendale Water and Power, according to a flyer the utility has on its website. Sgt. Victor Jackson with the Glendale Police Department confirmed it was a GWP drone.
Jackson said that the drone should have concluded its scouting mission by Wednesday.
A flyer sent by GWP reads: “Glendale Water & Power electrical crews and our certified contractors are inspecting electrical equipment such as power poles, power lines, electrical vaults, replacing or upgrading power poles, and inspecting power poles for building the new fiber optic broadband network.”
There are five contractors helping with the inspection. Innovative Consulting Concepts, ENTRUST Solutions Group and Firmatek are the group of contractors using drones to look at equipment at the top of power poles and power lines. The companies also might need access to backyards depending on the location of the power poles. They are knocking on doors of residences and businesses to ask to inspect power equipment, but if there is no answer, they will leave a door hanger and check back again. The contractors are required to carry badges identifying themselves and their company.
