Boys’ Tennis: Moravec, Lai Crowned Doubles Champions

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ tennis team sent individuals to compete in the Rio Hondo League Tournament on April 29. The team of Spencer Moravec and Isaac Lai capped their 33-0 undefeated league season as doubles champions. Meanwhile, Konan Sahara was the singles tournament runner-up.
Moravec and Lai defeated South Pasadena’s team with a pair of 6-3 set wins for the doubles title. The LCHS duo defeated their teammates, David Lee and Aaron Pan, in the semifinals with a pair of 6-3 set wins. Moravec and Lai posted an 8-5 victory over Temple City’s team in the quarterfinal round after receiving a first-round bye. Lee and Pan finished third overall after losing to South Pasadena’s duo, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 8-10.
La Cañada’s tandem of Cayden Chang and Blake Chang were defeated by the South Pasadena’s team in the semifinal round, 6-7 (5-7), 1-6. Cayden and Blake Chang defeated South Pasadena’s team, 8-6, in the quarterfinal after posting a swift 8-1 first-round victory over San Marino’s team.
In singles play, Sahara lost in straight sets to San Marino’s league champion, 0-6, 2-6, in the title match. He swept Temple City’s top player, 6-2, 7-5, in the semifinal round after posting a convincing 8-1 victory over teammate Seth Lindenfeld, 8-1, in the quarterfinal round. Sahara opened tournament play with an 8-2 victory over a Temple City player, while Lindenfeld secured an 8-4 victory over Monrovia’s player in the first round.
The Spartans, who finished the regular season as league co-champions with a 7-1 record (9-3 overall), hosted Cypress on May 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division I first-round match, which ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, LCHS would advance to the second round and meet either Marina High of Huntington Beach (17-3) or Cate High of Carpinteria (7-4) on May 3.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
Flintridge Prep hosted Simi Valley on May 1 in a CIF Southern Section Division II first-round contest. The match ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue.
If victorious, Flintridge Prep (17-1 overall) would advance to the second round and meet either Sunny Hills High of Fullerton (12-3) or Walnut (12-3) on May 3.
