Showers and additional water use restrictions related to a temporary imported water shutdown helped reduce water usage by Foothill Municipal Water District customers by 34% in March as compared to the same month in 2013, according to the agency.
California is using 2013 as a benchmark for measuring water savings in the state. Cumulative water savings for the district since the state-mandated reductions began last June is 27%.
In February, which was the hottest on record, water use increased by 3% in the area, as compared with 2013.
Residents rebounded in March, when almost all water agencies across the Foothills met their state-mandated targets for the month.
La Cañada Flintridge’s largest water agency, Valley Water Co., is required to curtail usage by 36%. It came close last month with a reduction of 33%. Mesa Crest Water District customers saved 45% while those served by La Cañada Irrigation District saved 41%. Crescenta Valley Water District, which serves some LCF residents, also recorded savings of 41%, well above its state-mandated target of 18%.
“The imported water shutdown conducted in March significantly raised conservation performance,” FMWD General Manager Nina Jazmadarian said in a release. “While the shutdown of the imported water system was planned for routine maintenance and repairs, residents diligently cut back on water use to ensure adequate supply. We really appreciated customers turning off their irrigation systems during that period of limited water availability.”
