LCUSD’s Mathematics Battle Rages On

La Cañada Unified School District 4th- through 6th-grade students are diligently preparing for the fifth annual Mathzilla competition from 4:45-7:30 p.m on Thursday, May 3, at Palm Crest Elementary School.
About 200 students will vie for medals in the individual competition, which consists of a speed round and a problem-solving test.
After the individual competition, teams from each of the district’s three elementary schools will compete in the always exciting team relay competition. Palm Crest Elementary hopes to defend its title and the coveted Mathzilla team trophy on its home turf.
Students must register in advance to take part in the speed round at their individual schools the week before the competition. On the night of the event, sign-in will start at 4:45 p.m., with the 30-minute problem-solving test to be administered in classrooms. After students complete the problem-solving round, they will have pizza and drinks. Parent volunteers and teachers will grade the problem solving tests while interested students can compete in a Rubik’s Cube contest. The Team Competition will follow at 6:30 p.m. and the evening will conclude with an awards ceremony at 7:15 p.m.
For many students, Mathzilla caps off the year’s activities in the Math Olympiads for elementary and middle school competitions (MOEMS), which is used by LCUSD as its official math enrichment program for GATE students in 5th and 6th grades. More than 6,000 teams and 170,000 students competed in MOEMS worldwide last year, and LCUSD district teams typically place in the top 20%.
The public is welcome to come and cheer on the district’s mathletes.
