“Les Miserables” was anything but miserable at La Cañada High School last weekend.
Widely regarded as one of the most rigorous musicals to produce, the student production of Les Mis broke both attendance and proceeds records by 19%. The totals surpassed 2016’s “The Sound of Music” and 2011’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
“Les Miserables is a very challenging musical and the performances were outstanding,” vocal director Jeff Brookey said.
The 32-person cast, led by seniors Anthony Crehan (playing Jean Valjean) and Finn Sagal (Javert), performed six shows on Saturday and Sunday. “I was extremely impressed by the students’ vocal quality and emotion displayed throughout the run,” Brookey said.
Twenty-six members from band and orchestra programs provided the music under the guidance of conductor Jason Stone. Another 25 students handled the technical responsibilities, including set, backstage, costumes and lighting.
In all, more than 80 students had a hand in the production. Eick produced the show over the past several months with guest director Orlando Alexander.
