La Cañada High School students enrolled in Jeff Brookey’s choir classes have been singing from afar and submitting homemade videos featuring songs that inspire them — and others — to smile.
As part of the online curriculum this semester, Brookey began to give creatively-open assignments, such as to make art through any medium. Some students chose to paint, cook, sew and write poetry, while others sang in a “QuaranSing Challenge.”
“Sheltering-at-home has incited a burst of creativity from our choral students at La Cañada High School,” said Brookey, noting that his last creative assignment was called “Music Heals” and consisted of submitting a song performance either through audio-only or video. Many students performed solos and others collaborated with family members. The more experienced students were encouraged to virtually collaborate with other choir members for their performance, he said.
“The result was nothing short of amazing! I am super proud of the students and I am super proud to be their teacher,” Brookey said. “We will continue to make art throughout this pandemic. Music does heal.”
