Spartan Girls Finish 1st, Boys Claim 2nd

La Cañada High School competed in the Rio Hondo League finals at Lacy Park in San Marino last Thursday. The Spartans varsity girls’ squad claimed the league title led by sophomore Maya DeBrouwer, who finished first the 3-mile run with a 17:31.6 time.
All seven La Cañada runners finished in the top 20, producing 26 total points (and a 1:33:25.00 cumulative time), which was six points better than runners-up South Pasadena (1:34:46.40).
Junior Katelyn Matarese finished third with an 18:11.5 time while freshmen Charlotte Hopkins (18:40.7) and Halo Ball (19:26.6) finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Sophomore Kaoru Saito (19:34.6) took 11th place while junior Yasmin Ghaneh (19:41.8) and Brittany Rivas (21:17.7) came in 12th and 16th, respectively.
The Spartan boys’ team came in second with a 1:23:56.10 total time, just behind South Pasadena (1:23:37.50 total time) as each team scored 34 points.
Senior Max Smith (third, 16:19.5), junior Jamie Saunders (fourth, 16:33.6) and senior Siraaj Sandhu (fifth, 16:36.6) rounded out the top five as a pack, while George Hervey also posted a top-10 finish with a 16:58.8, good for ninth place.
Seniors Jackson McGuire (17:27.6) and Robert Lee (17:27.9) finished 13th and 14th, respectively, while junior Andres Uribe came in 21st with a 17:59.7 time.
La Cañada will compete in the CIF-SS prelims at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut on Saturday, Nov. 12.
