Over the winter break while most teams were idle, La Cañada High School’s wrestlers attended some of the top two tournaments on the West Coast.
Ten wrestlers represented LCHS in the Nevada for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 17. Senior team captain Kera Finnigan defeated Cheyenne Kellison, a state champion from Texas, for the title at 132 pounds. Finnigan won all her matches by fall.
Ten days later, the Spartans attended Upland’s Blackwatch, a prestigious two-day tournament. Phoebe Cucullu placed seventh at 143. Finnigan extended her undefeated streak in December with a 5-1 victory over Northview in the finals. Kira de Brito beat all her opponents by fall at 150 pounds and took home the Outstanding Wrestler Award.
