The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ water polo team dove into the new year with a 13-5 nonleague victory over visiting Pasadena Poly on Saturday. It was the first home game in the newly built pool on the south end of the LCHS campus.
“It was a long haul. To see the smile on the girls’ faces when they jumped in was worth it all,” LCHS athletic director Carrie Saks said. “We are so thankful to Flintridge Prep for housing us. [Prep’s] Athletic Director Sean Beattie has been … so gracious in letting us borrow the pool, as well as Flintridge Sacred Heart letting us swim on Saturdays.”
Senior captain Shereen Emadi scored La Cañada’s first goal in the new pool to tie the game 1-1 with 25 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Emadi tallied four goals and tied for the game-high mark with freshman teammate Lilli Perner.
Sophomore Kiley Ku scored the opening goal of the second quarter to give the Spartans a lead that held for the rest of the afternoon. LCHS extended its lead to 7-3 at halftime behind a pair of goals from Perner and junior captain Kadyn Day, who finished with three goals.
Sturdy goaltending by sophomore Didi Reifsnyder-Smith kept the visiting Panthers scoreless in the third quarter while the Spartans inflated their lead to a seven-goal margin.
Freshman Sofia Korshakovsk scored La Cañada’s final goal with 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to make it 13-5.
LCHS (3-4 overall) will host South Pasadena in a Rio Hondo League game today at 4 p.m. before competing in the two-day Claremont Tournament on Jan. 13-14.
