Spartans Sweep Temple City, Impress at SoCal Invitational

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ volleyball team swept visiting Temple City, 25-14, 25-21, 25-17, in a Rio Hondo League match on Oct. 5.
Senior Haley Clark racked up 12 kills, four aces, three digs and two assists, junior Ashby Zubchevich tallied 11 kills, eight digs, one ace and one block, and senior Tatum Purdy contributed 23 assists, six digs, three aces, one kill and one block. Senior Chloe Nussbaum had eight digs, three aces and three assists, while junior Danica Eggleston collected six assists, five digs and one kill. Sophomore Vani Tatoulian registered four kills, two digs and one block, while senior Emma Reed chipped in four kills. Freshman Maya Purdy recorded four digs, one kill and one ace, while freshman Luella Lewis produced one kill and one dig.
The Spartans defeated host San Marino in four games, 25-13, 12-25, 25-9, 25-13, in a league matchup on Oct. 9. Individual statistics were not reported to the Outlook Valley Sun.
LCHS competed in the SoCal Invitational in San Diego on Oct. 6 and 7, and finished with a 7-1 record as Nussbaum was named to the all-tournament team. The Spartans had a terrific weekend without losing a set until their tournament finale loss against Hagerty High of Oviedo, Florida, 25-18, 29-31, 13-15.
LCHS posted sweeps over four of the top 10 teams in San Diego, including Torrey Pines High, 25-23, 25-19; El Capitan High of Lakeside, 25-19, 25-23; Otay Ranch High of Chula Vista, 25-22, 26-24; and Pacific Ridge High of Carlsbad, 25-17, 25-13.
La Cañada also swept Kamehameha Hawai’i High of Kea’au, Hawaii, 25-22, 25-21; Lake Stevens High of Washington, 25-22, 25-18; and Scripps Ranch High of San Diego, 25-13, 25-23.
LCHS (24-10 overall, 7-0 in league) will conclude the regular season by hosting Oaks Christian High of Westlake Village on Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.

The Tologs lost to visiting Chaminade High of West Hills in four games, 20-25, 20-25, 25-10, 21-25, in an Angeles League match on Oct. 9 as senior Mikayla Hsieh racked up 14 kills, 13 digs, four aces and one block.
Freshman Allexa Valencia contributed 25 assists, 16 digs and one ace, while senior Lindsey Du amassed 30 digs, four assists and three aces. Senior Luisa Madrigal finished with 18 digs, eight kills, one ace and one assist, while junior Ally Du tallied 11 assists, six digs and four aces.
Senior Veronica Udell produced nine kills and two digs, junior Piper Scherbert recorded five kills and three digs, and sophomore Grace McCarthy collected five kills, three blocks and one dig.
Sophomore Alexandra Carr chipped in two kills and two blocks, while senior Lilly Venne had two kills. Senior Colleen Traver registered three assists, two digs and one ace, while senior Pia Costanzo notched five digs.
FSHA competed in the SoCal Invitational on Oct. 6 and 7, finishing with a 4-2 record after being swept by La La Jolla, 24-26, 15-25, in its tournament finale.
Lindsey Du racked up 21 digs, one ace and one assist, while Valencia produced 16 assists, seven digs and one block. Sophomore Grace Savarese recorded eight kills, two digs and one ace, Udell contributed four kills and two digs, and Carr registered four kills and one dig. Freshman Sophia Wright tallied five digs and one assist, while Costanzo chipped in six digs. Junior Sophia Astacaan finished with two digs, one kill and one block, while freshman Clare McCarthy had two kills.
The Tologs were sweet by Santiago High of Corona, 13-25, 19-25, in a tournament match on Oct. 7.
Lindsey Du contributed 18 digs and one ace, while Valencia collected 14 assists and four digs. Hsieh tallied nine digs, three aces, two kills and one block, while Scherbert registered six kills, two blocks and two digs. Grace McCarthy produced four kills and one block, while Savarese recorded five digs, two kills and one ace. Wright finished with five digs and one assist, while Udell chipped in two kills.

Scherbert finished with five kills and two blocks, Grace McCarthy contributed five aces and three kills, and Lindsey Du recorded eight digs, four aces and one assist. Hsieh tallied seven digs, five aces and three kills, Savarese collected four digs and three kills, and Wright notched five digs. Udell chipped in three kills and one block, Traver was credited with three assists and senior Ava Scaturchio had two digs.

FSHA swept Xavier Prep High of Palm Desert, 25-16, 25-18, in a tournament match on Oct. 6 as Scherbert finished with eight kills, two blocks and two digs. Valencia recorded 19 assists, four digs, two aces and one kill, while Hsieh racked up 12 digs, four kills, one ace, one block and one assist. Lindsey Du produced seven digs, three aces and one assist, while Wright contributed eight digs and three aces. Savarese collected five digs and four kills, Grace McCarthy tallied two kills, two digs and one block, and Udell had two kills, one block and one dig.

Hsieh contributed 14 kills, nine digs, one ace and one assist, while Valencia racked up 24 assists, 12 digs, one ace and one block. Lindsey Du produced 13 digs and three assists, while Savarese recorded eight kills, seven digs, two aces and one assist. Astacaan tallied two kills, two blocks and one dig, while Grace McCarthy finished with two kills and two aces. Wright collected eight digs and two aces, Costanzo chipped in three aces and two digs, and Udell registered three kills. Scaturchio notched three digs, while Venne was credited with two kills. Clare McCarthy had one block and one dig, while Traver had one assist.
Second-place FSHA (20-15, 5-2) will conclude the regular season by hosting Mayfield Senior of Pasadena for a nonleague match on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.

The Wolves defeated visiting Westridge School of Pasadena in four games, 22-25, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19, in a Prep League match on Oct. 3 as Abbie Callaway racked up 16 digs, 13 kills and three aces.
Frankie Callaway tallied seven kills and four digs, Jessica Powell recorded eight kills, six blocks and two digs, and Makayla Jones produced five kills and two blocks. Marissa Halley finished with 16 digs and two aces, while Ava Burlingame contributed six aces and one dig. Lucy Liu chipped in three kills and two blocks, Ashlyn Nam registered two aces, two blocks and one kill, and Jaleen Tseng had six digs.
Third-place Flintridge Prep (18-7 overall, 6-5 in league) visited Providence High in Burbank for its regular-season finale on Oct. 11; the league match ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.
