At a gathering of friends high atop Flintridge, I mentioned that I saw a car come to a complete stop at a stop sign.
There was disbelief, and deflection, “were they looking at a message on their cellphone?” Not that I could see. The banter shifted to “California stops” versus “foot off the accelerator pedal,” and other high-speed approaches … and near misses.
I propose that the city take down the stop signs, sell them to other municipalities and use the funds to fill the potholes and sudden dips in the road surface throughout our fair city. There is little point in the stop signs if there is little to no enforcement by the constabulary. They just create a false expectation.
The Outlook Valley Sun could run a weekly column of “Favorite Ignored Stop Signs”: El Vago Street and Alta Canyada Road or Berkshire Place and Highland Drive come to mind. I am sure there are many more.
