La Cañada High School students, in Christine Werner’s seventh grade science class, studied genetics and were tasked with determining which cat in their sample photos was the father of a group of kittens.
Visually, they looked at the coloring and marking of the possibilities in the photos and made projections. However, working in groups, they went into the lab to test DNA samples, using the gel electrophoresis process.
Students used a micropipette to extract samples. After, they analyzed their results and determined which cat was the father of the kittens and logged their experiments’ findings.
