The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada hosted representatives of the La Cañada Unified School District last week at lunch, where 19 new teachers and three new administrators were introduced at the service club’s annual “Apple for the Teacher” event.
Keeping with the Kiwanis international motto, “serving the children of the world,” the club not only offered new hires a warm welcome but handed over a $1,500 check to help fund scholarships for the annual 5th-grade trip to Pennsylvania’s Valley Forge.
“This money goes to scholarships for students who cannot afford to go to Valley Forge without help,” said Mike Leininger, the club’s president and a former LCUSD assistant superintendent of facilities and operations. “It certainly doesn’t cover all of it, but it’s something we like to do and we’re glad to help.”
The Kiwanis Club — which meets every Wednesday for lunch at Descano Gardens’ Van de Kamp Hall — also sponsors the Key Club and Builders Club at La Cañada High School and recognizes 6th-graders as “Terrific Kids.”
“Thank you so much, Kiwanis,” LCUSD Superintendent Wendy Sinnette said. “It’s always so great to be here and we look forward to this event.”
