Cameron Hong, a junior at La Cañada High School, has been selected for the Princeton Prize in Race Relations, representing the Los Angeles region as one of three recipients from the state of California.
Each year, the prestigious award recognizes 29 students across the country who have worked to promote racial inclusion and understanding.
Hong works to lower the barrier of entry for journalism in marginalized communities, which lack critical education in argumentative and expressive writing. She has trained more than 100 middle school students through her initiative, Published Points of View, which has received more than $6,000 in grants. As editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, “The Outspoken,” she publishes her students’ work.
Hong has been awarded a scholarship along with a trip paid by Princeton University to the Symposium on Race, which will be held at the college this April.
Hong said she’s looking forward to meeting other students passionate about racial justice in her cohort.
