Palm Crest Elementary School students know the meaning of giving. They spent months collecting clothing and shoes for children who live in a small village in Kenya. In the end, they had 11 55-gallon drums packed, ready to be shipped. Student council members working with teachers Kim Hardash and Mariana Valderhaugh came to school early many days to pack the items. The students got the idea after Elijah, Ashley and Nicole Otieno did a presentation of their visit there last summer, where they stayed with their grandparents in a village, while their father Dr. Charles Otieno, worked in a local hospital and opened a new unit. The district also donated old, outdated textbooks. Parent Jay Kim donated 2,400 new shirts and shorts from Icon Sports Group. Otieno paid for the shipment of all the items and the family will be there again this summer when the containers arrive.
