Local Athletes Win Gold in Junior Olympic Championships

Six water polo athletes from La Cañada High School recently represented the Rose Bowl Water Polo Club and won a gold medal in the 16-and-under Platinum Division of the USA Water Polo National Junior Olympic Championships.
Carolyne Stern, Genevieve Fraipont, Tess Fundter, Maddy Solares, Mimi Zwaneveld and Rayne Lopez helped their squad defeated Diablo Alliance, 11-7, in the final match at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The girls finished first among 48 teams in the division, adding another Junior Olympic crown after the group won the 14-and-under Platinum Division title two years ago.
Stern was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The local standout recently helped the USA youth water polo team win a gold medal in the Pan Am Uana Games in Peru.
