The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Los Angeles Marshall, 52-41, for fifth place in the LCHS Tournament last Saturday.
The Spartans (7-3 overall record) jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter and built a 15-point advantage at the half. They held on for the win and finished 2-2 in the competition.
Ryan Graves led LCHS with 18 points and Zack Feehan added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan Grande netted nine points and recorded four assists, Kyle Brown also had nine points, Jake George finished with seven assists and Garrett Kremer contributed two points.
LC opened the tournament on a positive note, defeating Hollywood High of Los Angeles, 74-48, in pool play. The Spartans then suffered their first setback of the tournament, falling to La Verne Bonita, 66-55. They also suffered a close defeat against San Gabriel Academy in pool play, placing the Spartans in a battle for fifth against the Barristers.
La Cañada, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A, will travel to Sherman Oaks to take on Notre Dame High School, ranked No. 3 in CIF-SS Division 3A, on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. The Spartans return home to host the Foothill Blvd. Classic against St. Francis, ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division 3AA, on Friday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.

The Spartans’ offense came to life too late in a 37-36 loss to San Gabriel Academy last week.
La Cañada was held to only 20 points in the first three quarters by the Eagles, who are ranked No. 9 in CIF-SS Division 3AA. San Gabriel Academy limited the home squad to 32% shooting from the field and only four free throws.
The Spartans rallied in the final quarter and outscored the Eagles, 16-2, but they fell one point short.
Kyle Brown led LCHS with 12 points and Ryan Graves added 10 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Grande netted seven points, Zack Feehan finished with four points and five rebounds, and Jake George contributed three points and five assists.
