The CIF Southern Section recently released its new playoff divisions for football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ water polo and girls’ tennis, affecting several local programs.
CIF uses a formula to develop a ranking that is based on regular season record, strength of schedule and playoff performances the past two seasons. The La Cañada High School varsity football program has struggled to win games the last few seasons, placing the team in Division 14, which includes 70 squads. St. Francis was moved down to Division 3 this year.
The only girls’ volleyball program that was affected by the new groupings was Flintridge Prep, which improved last season and was bumped up to Division 5. La Cañada remained in Division 3 and Flintridge Sacred Heart will continue to compete in Division 1/2.
After a solid 2018 campaign, the St. Francis varsity boys’ water polo team moved up to Division 5. The La Cañada and Flintridge Prep water polo squads remained in Division 4.
The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ tennis team was bumped back up to Division 1 after winning the CIF-SS Division 2 championship last fall. Flintridge Prep and Flintridge Sacred Heart remained in Division 4.
The local cross-country programs did not see any changes this year. LC, FSHA and St. Francis remained in Division 4, and Flintridge Prep will continue to compete in Division 5.
These are the initial pairings released by the CIF-SS and changes can be made prior to the season.
