Over the past two months, there have been many changes to our normal lives. Some people have been affected more severely than others, but these are trying times for everyone.
A couple of weeks ago, I was saddened to learn that the Valley Sun, one of our community’s valued partners, was closing. The Valley Sun, or “The Sun” as some people referred to it, has been a part of the La Cañada Flintridge Community for decades.
Growing up in town, I can recall opening up the paper and hoping I would know someone who was being written about. Or even better, when my little league team won a game and maybe my name got mentioned. (That was a rarity.)The Valley Sun was and has been a constant conduit to highlight the many happenings in our great city.
In normal times, community-based reporting and news is very important for the residents it serves. In today’s uncertain times, now probably more than ever, community-based news is critical in so many ways. While we social distance and cannot gather at events, the local news source is helpful in keeping us connected while reporting on local updates and activities.
When Charlie Plowman called me last week to let me know that he and The Outlook had purchased the Valley Sun (as well as the Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader), I was excited to know that our local tradition will continue. It will be in a slightly different format, but that tradition of serving our community will remain for many years to come.
I am looking forward to the time when the paper can cover our community events such as our local sports, our schools and philanthropic happenings. The Outlook and Valley Sun have served our community very well and now will continue that tradition in a combined approach.
With so many changes in our lives, relying on local news sources will only help our community residents and businesses. I want to thank Charlie and his team at The Outlook, as well as the Los Angeles Times, for working together to make this happen and allowing this great tradition to continue.
