As the season of giving is upon the community, consider contributing to the La Cañada Teacher Association Scholarship Fund for high school seniors. During 2019-20, the fund gave more than $32,000 to seniors headed to college.
Additionally, two new scholarships were initiated in 2020:
The Adam Carmeli Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Carmeli (LCHS 2007 and USC Marshall 2011) who died in 2017.
Carmeli benefited greatly from his LCHS education and went on to enjoy a successful career in logistics with Expeditors International. He attended LCF schools from kindergarten at Paradise Canyon through LCHS. His memory lives on through this annual scholarship funded by his mother, Cynthia Gates, and the LCTA Scholarship Fund.
The award is intended for a student planning to further his or her education in any aspect of business or entrepreneurship. The inaugural awardees of this scholarship were Rachel Hwang, who is attending Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business and Noy Chatoyan, who deferred his attendance to USC, in favor of PCC, while virtual learning is in effect.
The Terese Caire Future Teacher Scholarship honors a beloved 3rd-grade teacher at Palm Crest Elementary who died last spring due to COVID-19. Caire embodied the joy of learning and love for children. The first recipients of this scholarship were Katie Shue, UC Davis and Justin Wang, UC San Diego.
Two other former students are memorialized via the fund: The Patrick Rappleye Scholarship honors a musician specializing in a wind instrument, and the Fred Stuhr Scholarship honors a visual artist.
Six other scholarships are awarded through the LCTA Fund in memory of Steven R. Orr (parent) and Marjorie Pursel and Jeanne Maus, both former community members.
