More than half of La Cañada Flintridge residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and the number will continue to climb with California expanding eligibility to all residents 16 and older today.
According to the L.A. Department of Public Health, La Cañada Flintridge has one of the highest vaccination rates in the county with 52.7% of residents having at least one shot of the vaccine. Nearby cities San Marino (53.3%), South Pasadena (52.4%) and Pasadena (47.6%) have similar numbers, but Glendale’s rate is only 34.4%.
All Los Angeles County residents 16 and older, regardless of medical conditions, were allowed to begin scheduling appointments as early as Wednesday. Residents under 18 can only receive the Pfizer vaccine.
L.A. County — the most populous in the state with 10 million residents — has administered more than 5 million doses of the vaccine and 37.1% of California residents 16 and older have received at least one dose.
On Tuesday, the state paused on administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine following six cases of women between the ages of 16 and 48 developed unusual blood clots six to 13 days after receiving the vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Food and Drug Administration are reviewing the cases.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine accounts for about 4% of the state’s weekly allocations and will not slow down the state’s reopening plans.
“It will not materially impact our ability to fulfill our expectations and commitment to provide enough vaccines to fully vaccinate all those that seek to get vaccinated so that we can begin to more fully open our economy by June 15,” said Newsom, who himself received a dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Newsom added that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine “has been extraordinarily safe save for six specific reported instances that the CCD and FDA have highlighted today. That’s less than one in a million incidences that were deemed severe.”
On Monday, L.A. Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer expressed confidence in the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose and proved to be effective in preventing hospitalizations and death during the trials.
“These are still highly effective and very safe vaccines,” Ferrer said, “among the safest actually that we’ve seen in terms of both side effects and obviously serious allergic reactions to the vaccines.”
The County also modified its health order to allow indoor live events and performances with limited capacity beginning today. Private meetings such as conferences and receptions are also permitted with restrictions such as social distancing, assigned seating and having no more than six people per table for guests not vaccinated. Indoor private meetings are also permitted but strongly discouraged.
