Teachers’ Role in Paying It Forward

First published in the April 21 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

This is a tribute to teachers and our local pediatrician mentioned in Camilla Castellanos’ article on March 24.
Back in the early 1980s, my colleague Mr. Clark Barrett, who taught 11th grade Honors English and Humanities, encouraged our students at Schurr High School in Montebello to apply to Ivy League colleges.
Dr. John Rodarte of Descanso Pediatrics in La Cañada was our first student to attend Harvard University. I know that Mr. Barrett, Mrs. Lucille McGuiness (who have both passed away), as well as Ms. Ella Wing, Mr. Dave Lebow, and other faculty members like myself, are proud to see Dr. Rodarte paying it forward with his love and compassion for the Ukrainian orphans.
As Christa McAuliffe of the Challenger once said, “I touch the future, I teach.”
