The La Cañada High School varsity football team won its Rio Hondo League finale over visiting Pasadena Poly, 27-6, last Thursday.
The Spartans (6-4 overall record) finished in a three-way tie for second place with San Marino and South Pasadena, each posting a 3-2 league record. (All three of the runner-up teams qualified for the CIF postseason along with league champion Monrovia.)
LCHS will open the Division XI playoffs by traveling to Campbell Hall High in North Hollywood (8-2 overall) for a first-round matchup on Friday at 7 p.m.
LCHS senior Corey Cheung rushed for 285 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, eclipsing the 200-plus yard mark for a third time this season. Meanwhile, junior quarterback Macky Plocher completed five passes for 66 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 56 yards on eight carries.
Senior Trent Carey had three receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown. Junior Tyler Bond made a 19-yard catch and recorded four tackles, senior Jake Hofman had a 10-yard reception, and junior Alan Razo hauled in an 8-yard catch. Senior Andrew Gevorgian rushed for 4 yards on one carry with five tackles and an interception on defense, sophomore Sohan Garg rushed for 5 yards on three carries and made one tackle, and senior kicker Royce Xiao went 3-for-3 in PAT attempts.
Senior Mateo Gallegos racked up a team-high nine tackles while senior Jake Adkins registered seven tackles, a sack for a loss of 7 yards and blocked a field goal. Junior Kei Hartzberg finished with five tackles while juniors Anthon Cannon, Paulos Cucullu, Lorenz Bayug and Brandon Goldsby each had three tackles. Sophomores Josh Carruthers and Spencer Turner each made a pair of tackles, while sophomores River Wokosin, Morgan Strauss and Matthew Couts each had one tackle.
