La Cañada Falls in CIF Opener at Vista Murrieta

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ water polo team lost its CIF-SS Division IV first-round matchup at Vista Murrieta, 9-3, on Tuesday.
Ian Wipfli, Nathan Honbaum and Travis Pung each scored one goal for the Spartans, who finished the season third in the Rio Hondo League standings with a 3-5 league record (5-17 overall).
La Cañada previously edged host South Pasadena in its regular season finale, 4-3, which created a tie between the two schools for the final playoff spot and third place in the league standings. Tait Landswick scored a pair of goals while Wipfli scored once.
The Spartans and Tigers returned to the pool that same day for an abbreviated two-quarter game, with LCHS winning 6-5 to secure the final CIF playoff berth. Wipfli produced three goals, while Landswick, Jack Kabassian and Max Hong each scored once.
