Spartans Pick Up League Win Over San Marino

The La Cañada High School varsity baseball team edged visiting San Marino, 2-1, in a Rio Hondo League game last Saturday.
Sophomore Carson Kelly allowed one earned run on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Senior captain Alex Higa went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, sophomore Josh Proctor went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base, and senior captain Ethan Geller, senior captain J.J. Won and junior Tyler Gao each had a base hit.
The Spartans routed visiting Eagle Rock High of Los Angeles, 16-5, in a nonleague matchup last Friday. Geller, who went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs, two walks, an RBI and a stolen base, struck out six batters in four innings to earn the win. Higa went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk, Proctor went 2-for-4 with a double, four runs and three RBIs, and senior Dennis Landon went 1-for-1 with a double, an RBI and a run. Sophomore Leon Chen recorded a hit and three RBIs while Gao finished with a hit, two RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Junior Justin Mccubbin tallied a hit and three runs while Won registered two walks, a hit, an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Senior Kai Larsen pitched a pair of hitless and scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts while senior Daylen Larsen struck out two batters and allowed one hit in one inning of relief. Senior Ben Kim had a base hit, junior Hayden Dancsecs walked and scored once, and sophomore Cash Carroll walked once.
La Cañada recently lost a league game at Temple City, 5-3. Gao went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs while Higa went 2-for-3 with a run. Mccubbin registered a hit and a stolen base while Geller finished with a hit and an RBI. Kelly allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts across a pair of scoreless relief innings, Chen had four strikeouts in two innings of relief, and Carroll recorded two strikeouts and allowed one earned run over two innings.
The Spartans previously lost a league game to visiting South Pasadena, 8-0, as Chen allowed one unearned run with three strikeouts in two innings of relief. Geller tallied a hit and a stolen base, Dancsecs and Gao each had a base hit, and Higa and Won each walked once
LCHS (4-7 overall, 1-3 in league) will visit Temple City for a league game today at 3:30 p.m. before opening a two-game set against visiting Monrovia on March 27.

Flintridge Prep sophomore Rowan Schaeffer struck out four batters during a recent game against Newbury Park

The Wolves lost the matinee game of a Prep League doubleheader at Palos Verdes Chadwick, 2-1, last Friday as sophomore Brian Xu went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run.
Freshman Will Grable, who had an RBI base hit, pitched three innings of relief with four strikeouts while sophomore Rowan Schaeffer allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout over three innings. Senior captain Max Brunngraber and sophomore Will Koh each recorded a hit, a walk and two stolen bases, sophomore Calvin Chen finished with a hit and two stolen bases, and junior George Hayes walked once.
Flintridge Prep blanked Palos Verdes Chadwick, 6-0, in the first game of a doubleheader last Friday as Brunngraber pitched a complete-game shutout with 14 strikeouts while allowing a pair of hits and one walk.
Senior captain John Kully went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs, a stolen base and a walk, Grable went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a walk, and sophomore Matthew Chino went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run. Xu went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run, a stolen base and a walk while Chen went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Schaeffer registered a hit and a walk, sophomore Ethan Park tallied a base hit and senior Evan Yoon scored once.
The Wolves previously opened the season series with an 8-3 victory over visiting Palos Verdes Chadwick. Yoon earned the win after allowing three earned runs on two hits and four walks with one strikeout across five innings while sophomore Casey Augenstein pitched a pair of perfect innings in relief with one strikeout. Xu went 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBIs, two walks, a stolen base and a run, Koh recorded a double, an RBI and a run, and Brunngraber tallied a double, an RBI and a walk. Chen went 2-for-3 with a run while Kully finished with three runs, three stolen bases and a walk. Grable tallied a hit and a run, Chino produced a walk and a run, and freshman Nathan Sanok notched an RBI.
Flintridge Prep (7-5 overall, 2-2 in league) will visit Rio Hondo Prep in Arcadia on Tuesday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. before hosting the Kares for a rematch on March 31.

St Francis senior Grant Valentine went 2 for 2 in putout attempts to help the Golden Knights beat Sierra Canyon

The Golden Knights edged visiting Sierra Canyon High of Chatsworth, 2-1, in the rubber match of a Mission League series on Saturday.
Junior Kalani Quiroz, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, allowed one earned run on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts across five innings to earn the win. Senior Xander Douglas picked up a save after pitching 1.2 perfect innings with one strikeout. Senior Lucas Dixon recorded a hit, a walk and a run, junior Holden Deitch tallied a hit, junior John Calmette finished with a walk and a run, and junior Brody Ruyle walked once.
SFHS lost a league game at Sierra Canyon High, 4-1, last Friday. Dixon, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, struck out five batters across three innings, Ruyle recorded a double and a walk, and sophomore Caleb Thatcher went 2-for-4. Calmette tallied a hit, a walk and a run while Deitch finished with a hit and a walk. Junior Lucas Favretto struck out three batters in two innings of relief while junior Joe Krasnowski allowed one hit in one inning of relief. Sophomore Jordan Lewallen had three walks and a stolen base while Quiroz walked once.
The Golden Knights blanked visiting Sierra Canyon High, 3-0, in their series opener last Wednesday. Quiroz, who went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, earned a save after recording three strikeouts and allowing just one hit across a pair of scoreless innings. Caleb Thatcher tossed five scoreless innings with two hits, four walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. Lewallen recorded a hit and an RBI, Deitch produced a hit, and sophomore Dane Shepard and Ruyle each walked once and scored a run.
St. Francis (8-6 overall, 5-4 in league) will conclude its league series at Loyola High in Los Angeles on Friday, March 24, at 3:30 p.m. before opening a three-game set at Chaminade High in West Hills on March 28.
