Spanish Artist Makes Descanso Debut With ‘Crossing Glances’

La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities Association and the city of La Cañada Flintridge proudly present the culmination of their inaugural Artist-in-Residence Program, introducing world-renowned Spanish painter Javier Montesol.
Montesol is best known for his iconic paintings of Spanish dancers and depictions of Spanish culture. His work is included in numerous international collections, including Madrid’s Prado Museum, Museo Reina Sofia, and in private collections around the world. In fall 2022, La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities hosted Montesol and introduced him to the people and culture of Southern California. He returns here in April and May 2023 to complete two important projects.
Collaborating with 14 La Cañada High School art students on Thursday, April 27, Montesol will paint a live large mural in the courtyard of La Cañada High School. This performance art will be similar to an event commissioned by the National Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona in 2019.
Montesol’s first-ever California exhibit, “Miradas — Crossing Glances,” will debut at the historic Boddy House in Descanso Gardens on May 2 and 3. On Thursday, May 4, more than 60 original pieces by the artist will be offered for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to LCF Sister Cities.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a VIP reception; general admission begins at 6:30 p.m. The festive night will include a taste of Spanish culture with flamenco dancers, Spanish music, Spanish wine and light fare.
