Spartans Finish as Molten Classic Runner-Up

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ volleyball team finished as the Lakewood Molten Classic runner-up after losing to Redondo Union of Redondo Beach in straight sets, 13-25, 19-25, 16-25, in the tournament championship last Saturday.
The Spartans reached the title match with a five-game, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13, win over Lakewood last Saturday. Individual statistics for the tournament finale were not reported to the Outlook Valley Sun.
LCHS previously swept Long Beach Poly, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19, to end the first day of tournament play on Aug. 12. Junior Ashby Zubchevich registered 12 kills, seven digs, four aces and one block while senior Haley Clark recorded 10 kills, eight digs, four aces and one assist. Senior Tatum Purdy racked up 22 assists, five digs, two aces and one kill while senior Chloe Nussbaum collected 14 digs, two aces and two assists. Sophomore Vani Tatoulian produced three kills, two blocks and one dig, freshman Maya Purdy tallied six digs, two kills and one ace, and junior Danica Eggleston finished with three assists. Senior Emma Reed recorded two digs and one block, freshman Luella Lewis had one block and one dig and junior Irelyn Fung notched one dig.
The Spartans opened tournament play with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 sweep over Torrance. Clark racked up 20 kills, 11 digs and one assist while Zubchevich collected 16 kills, seven digs and one. Tatum Purdy amassed 30 assists, six digs, two kills and two aces, Nussbaum registered 10 digs, six assists and two aces and Maya Purdy tallied 12 digs, three blocks and one kill. Eggleston recorded five assists and two digs, Reed produced three kills and three blocks, and Lewis finished with two blocks and one dig.
La Cañada played a pair of nonleague matchups prior to the tournament.
Clark recorded 16 kills and five digs in the Spartans’ loss, 22-25, 24-26, 27-29, to Marymount High in Los Angeles. Zubchevich tallied 11 kills, four digs and one block while Tatum Purdy racked up 32 assists, eight digs and one kill. Nussbaum produced 12 digs, four aces and two assists while Maya Purdy recorded eight digs, five kills and three assists. Tatoulian finished with four aces, two blocks, one kill and one dig while Reed had four kills and one block.
The Spartans previously lost a nonleague match at Sierra Canyon High in Chatsworth, 15-25, 20-25, 18-25. Clark collected 16 kills, three digs, two aces, one block and one assist while Zubchevich registered 13 kills and eight digs. Tatum Purdy tallied 28 assists and five digs while Nussbaum racked up 19 digs and three assists. Maya Purdy produced four digs and three kills while Reed recorded two blocks, one kill and one dig. Tatoulian finished with one dig and one assist while Lewis had one ace.
LCHS (3-3 overall as of Aug. 22) will visit Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy for a nonleague matchup on Friday at 6 p.m. before visiting Chaminade High in West Hills on Aug. 31.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

The Tologs ended a two-match losing streak and secured its first victory this season by sweeping visiting Westridge School of Pasadena, 25-14, 25-14, 25-18, last Friday.
Senior Veronica Udell led with seven kills and two digs, senior Luisa Madrigal contributed six kills and 10 digs, and junior Piper Scherbert added five kills. Senior Mikayla Hsieh had an impressive performance with 16 assists, six aces, four kills, four digs and three blocks. Senior Lindsey Du amassed 30 digs, four aces and two assists while junior Ally Du tallied 13 assists, four digs and one ace.
Sophomore Grace McCarthy collected four kills and one dig while freshman Sophia Wright notched eight digs and one ace. Sophomore Grace Savarese recorded two kills, two digs and one ace while junior Sophia Astacaan posted one kill and two digs. Sophomore Alexandra Carr had two kills while freshman Clare McCarthy had one kill.
FSHA suffered an 8-25, 22-25, 19-25 defeat against visiting Alemany High of Mission Hills, a two-time CIF Southern Section champion, in a nonleague match last Wednesday.
Madrigal collected 12 digs, eight kills, three blocks and one ace while Hsieh racked up seven assists, six digs, five kills and two blocks. Udell registered four kills, one block and one dig while Scherbert tallied four kills and one block. Lindsey Du recorded 12 digs and one assist while Ally Du produced nine assists and five digs. Wright notched five digs, one ace and one assist, Grace McCarthy had three blocks, one ace and one dig, and Clare McCarthy finished with one kill and two blocks.
The Tologs previously lost their season opener at Temple City in four games, 17-25, 28-26, 23-25, 16-25.
Madrigal registered 16 digs, nine kills, one ace and one block, Ally Du racked up 12 digs, nine assists, five aces and one kill, and Hsieh tallied 10 digs, seven assists and six kills. Udell recorded four kills and two digs while Scherbert produced four kills. Lindsey Du collected seven digs, five assists, two aces and one kill while Wright finished with six digs and two aces. Grace McCarthy notched one ace, one block and one dig while Clare McCarthy had one kill and one block.
FSHA (1-2 overall) traveled to Oakwood High in North Hollywood for a nonleague match yesterday; the result will be included in the next issue of the Outlook Valley Sun. The Tologs will host La Cañada for a nonleague match on Friday at 6 p.m. before hosting South Pasadena on Aug. 28.

FLINTRIDGE PREP

The Wolves recently competed in the Providence Tournament and finished with a 4-1 record. Flintridge Prep lost to Village Christian High of Sun Valley, 25-12, 28-26, after defeating host Providence High in Burbank, 25-14, 25-23, in a pair of tournament matchups last Saturday. Individual statistics for the final day of tournament play were not reported to the Outlook Valley Sun.
Flintridge Prep edged Crossroads High of Santa Monica, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12, to finish pool play undefeated last Thursday as Abbie Callaway recorded 12 kills and three aces. Frankie Callaway tallied seven kills while Marissa Halley racked up 18 digs. Makayla Jones and Jessica Powell each finished with five kills while Lucy Liu notched three aces.
The Wolves swept Loara High of Anaheim, 25-13, 25-11, in a tournament match. Jones produced six kills, Halley and Abbie Callaway each recorded seven digs and Maya Itani had six aces.
Flintridge Prep opened tournament play with a 25-15, 25-15 sweep over St. Genevieve High of Panorama City as Powell registered 10 kills. Jones had four kills, Ashlyn Nam and Liu each collected four aces, and Jaleen Tseng and Clara Bassuk each finished with four kills.
The Wolves previously opened the regular season by defeating visiting Glendale in four-games, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, as Abbie Callaway collected 17 digs, 10 kills and six aces. Natalia Pradhan recorded nine kills, Nam finished with seven digs and four aces and Jones tallied four blocks.
Flintridge Prep (5-1 overall) will host San Gabriel in a nonleague match on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before opening Prep League action at Mayfield Senior on Aug. 29.
