Unite to Protest Sharp Water Rate Hikes

The La Cañada Irrigation District recently distributed a notice of proposed rate increases which, if adopted, would increase water rates by more than 60% by January 2028.
In addition, the proposal would assess drought-related surcharges of up to an additional 34.2% based on the severity of drought circumstances as determined by the district’s board of directors. Together, these proposals could double rates over the course of four years.
The notice states that the board will consider adopting the rate proposals if fewer than a majority of property owners or ratepayers do not file a protest prior to their meeting on Nov. 14, 2023. Read differently, they won’t (or can’t?) consider the proposal if a majority of homeowners or ratepayers protest.
Protests must be in the form of a simple letter sent to the district’s board secretary at the district’s office. The rate proposal is posted on the district’s website (lacanadaid.org) under the “Service” tab.
I encourage all La Cañada Irrigation District customers to submit their protest.
