Spartans Open League With Victory Over Temple City

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated visiting Temple City 54-28 in their Rio Hondo League opener on Dec. 13.
Senior Andrianna Pitsos racked up 16 points, four rebounds and one block, while sophomore Emma Sengul tallied 12 points, two assists, one steal and one rebound. Senior Sydney Magtoto contributed six points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist, senior Isabella Chividjian finished with six rebounds, five points, two steals and one assist, and senior Talia Miyamoto chipped in five points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Junior Jennifer Musso produced seven rebounds, three points and three steals, while sophomore Madison Hunt registered nine rebounds and two points. Freshman Tessa Choi scored three points, while junior Ella Magtoto recorded two points and one assist.
The Spartans lost to visiting South Pasadena 55-38 in a league game on Dec. 15.
Musso recorded 13 points, four rebounds and one steal, while Sengul finished with 11 points, two rebounds and one steal. Chividjian contributed five points, four steals, three rebounds and one assist, while Miyamoto tallied seven rebounds, four points, one block, one steal and one assist. Hunt produced three rebounds, two points and one steal, Pitsos registered three rebounds and two points, and Sydney Magtoto had three rebounds, one point and one assist.
La Cañada (5-5 overall, 1-1 in league) will host its New Year’s Ball Tournament next week, starting with a pair of matchups against Maranatha High of Pasadena and Flintridge Prep on Dec. 26. The Spartans will resume league play at Monrovia on Jan. 10.

The Wolves routed host Palos Verdes Chadwick 62-26 in a Prep League game on Dec. 15.
Sophomore Maddie Smith recorded 11 points, while sophomore Akemi Fu finished with 10 points. Junior Gigi Mastras registered eight points and six rebounds, freshman Megan Quoch contributed eight points and five rebounds, and junior Olivia Childs scored eight points. Freshmen Addison Lee and Miya Naruko each chipped in five points, while sophomore Pressley Huie tallied four points. Senior Catherine Baldocchi produced two points, while junior Caydence Acker had one point.
Flintridge Prep (12-1, 4-0) will compete in the La Cañada New Year’s Ball Tournament, starting with a matchup against La Cañada on Dec. 26 at 7 p.m., before resuming league play at Providence High in Burbank on Jan. 10.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy junior Jackie Chavarry scored two points to help the Tologs beat Maranatha High in a nonleague matchup last week

The Tologs secured a 44-24 nonleague victory over visiting Maranatha High of Pasadena on Dec. 13 to extend their win streak to a season-best four games.
Junior Sophia Astacaan racked up a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while senior Isabelle Risha finished with 27 rebounds and 12 points. Junior Ava Nawrocki and sophomore Lori Yacoubian each scored three points, while junior Jackie Chavarry and sophomore Ruzanna Margaryan each chipped in two points.
FSHA (6-6) will compete in the Sacred Heart Tournament, starting with a matchup against Sacred Heart of Jesus on Dec. 27, before opening Sunshine League play at Louisville High in Woodland Hills on Jan. 4.
