Trash Haulers Offer Christmas Tree Collection Services

La Cañada Flintridge trash haulers are picking up Christmas trees from residents.
To prepare them, trash haulers have outlined the guidelines and timelines residents should be aware of when looking to rid their homes of their Christmas tree.

ATHENS SERVICES
Holiday trees are 100% recyclable and can be collected through the second week of January on customers’ normal pickup day.
Trees are delivered to various landfills to be used as mulch or cover material. Some even go to Athens’ American Organics compost facility in Victorville.
Athens asks that customers use its tips to properly get rid of a tree:

  • Remove stands, ornaments, lights and tinsel.
  • Place holiday trees next to home’s regular trash containers.
  • Cut trees in half if they are more than 6 feet in length.
  • Trees with flocking or fire retardants are not acceptable.
  • Customers who missed the recycling date can cut up the tree and place it in their yard waste container(s).
They also advise customers to report any illegal dumping of holiday trees to the Sheriff’s Station.

REPUBLIC SERVICES
Real holiday trees will be accepted at the curb by Allied Waste Services, a Republic Services company from now through Jan. 13.
Republic Services asks customers to take off all lights, ornaments, garlands and tinsel, as well as the metal or plastic stand.
If a tree is more than 6 feet tall, customers are asked to cut it in half for safe and easy collection.
If customers want to keep their tree until after Jan. 13, they are asked to cut it into pieces to fit into their yard waste cart with the lid closed.
Holiday wreaths and greenery can also be recycled by putting them into the yard waste cart. The wreaths and greenery must also be bare, removed of all wires, hooks, bows and other decorations.
Collected trees and greenery are turned into mulch, compost and ground cover, according to Republic Services.
If customers are discarding an artificial tree or wreath, they are asked to place the pieces into the trash cart or request a bulk item pickup. Artificial trees and wreaths are not recyclable.

NASA SERVICES
NASA customers can place their trees, free of all ornaments and all other decorative materials, next to their barrels on their usual trash day to be picked up.
The free-of-charge service will be up and running up to three weeks after Christmas day and will go toward composting.
If any customers have problems or more questions they can call and make special arrangements, if needed.
Residents with questions should call their waste hauler: Athens Services (888) 336-6100, Republic Services (800) 299-4898 or NASA Services at (888) 888-0388.

Holiday to Affect Trash Collection, Transit Services
In observance of the holidays, trash collection and transit services will be operating on holiday schedules, according to the city of LCF.
All trash collection services will be delayed one day and will return to their regular schedule on Jan. 8.
LCF Shuttle Line 34 will not be in service through Friday, Jan. 5. Regular service will resume Tuesday, Jan. 9.
