Assistance League Opens Applications for Hillgren Scholarships

Assistance League of Flintridge is now accepting applications for the Mary Ellen Hillgren Memorial Scholarships.
Two scholarships of $2,000 each are awarded annually to La Cañada High School seniors who will be attending a four-year college or university this fall. The applications are available from LCHS counselors and on ALFlintridge.org.
The scholarship was established in 1995 to honor Hillgren, who served as president of ALF, as well as two years as president of the National Assistance League.
Hillgren was a strong believer in public schools and encouraged students’ philanthropic accomplishments as well as academic achievement. The Hillgren family funds the entirety of the scholarship awards.
In addition to the application students are asked to submit a typed essay not to exceed one page describing how their involvement in community service and extracurricular school activities, including athletics, have helped build their character. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The names of all recipients are engraved on a perpetual plaque that is displayed in the trophy case at LCHS.
Applications must be returned to the Hillgren Scholarship Committee, Assistance League of Flintridge, located at 4607 Oakwood Ave., in La Cañada Flintridge.
The deadline for submitting applications is Monday, April 15. The scholarships will be presented at the Senior Awards Ceremony at LCHS. For more information, contact ALF at (818) 790-1328.
