Mystery Novelist Coming to Flintridge Bookstore

Writer, editor and community activist Gary Phillips is set to appear at the Flintridge Bookstore on May 5 at 4 p.m.
The Los Angeles native’s more than two dozen books range from hard-boiled mysteries, to graphic novels and anthologies.
Phillips’ latest work, “Ash Dark as Night,” is the second book in the Harry Ingram Mystery series.
His debut novel, “Violent Spring,” was published in 1994 and was the first installment of his acclaimed Ivan Monk series. In 2020, it was named one of the essential crime novels of Los Angeles. He also writes graphic novels, including his 2005 miniseries “Angeltown,” and has edited anthologies like 2018’s “The Obama Inheritance: Fifteen Stories of Conspiracy Noir.” In 2022, Phillips released the mystery novel “One-Shot Harry,” set in 1960’s L.A. and featuring an African American crime scene photographer investigating the death of his friend.
The Washington Post and Booklist named “One-Shot Harry” as one of the best mysteries of 2022. Phillips was a writer and co-producer on “Snowfall,” streaming on Hulu, about crack and the CIA in 1980s South Central L.A. He has also served on the national board of the Mystery Writers of America.
Flintridge Bookstore is located at 858 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge. The bookstore’s hours are Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is street parking and a parking lot behind the store off Beulah Drive.
