Wielding the familiar golden shovels used for ceremonies such as Tuesday’s, Mayor Jonathan Curtis was joined by other La Cañada Flintridge city officials and leaders as they helped plant a pair of young crepe myrtle trees in the Glenhaven Park.
The activity was in honor of Arbor Day, which was late last month. LCF has, for 28 years, been recognized as a Tree City USA by National Arbor Day Foundation. Each year, a new tree — or a few new trees — are introduced.
Curtis read aloud a proclamation that included many details about the benefits of trees in town, including that they “can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide a habitat for wildlife and people … and wherever they are planted, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal.”
His colleagues agreed. Edward Hitti, the city’s director of public works, said the trees remain a worthwhile investment in town. City Manager Mark Alexander commented that LCF’s reputation for caring for trees brings with it important recognition.
“Aesthetically, it’s pleasing to the eye to be able to drive up and down the city streets and see trees well taken care of and well-manicured to provide shade and a place to play for all of us,” said Gonzalo Venegas, the city’s facilities and maintenance superintendent.
For their part, the crepe myrtles planted Tuesday will give back by contributing a dash of pink and yellow to the city when they bloom.
