Sheri Morton confirmed the old adage about the best way to a person’s heart is through her stomach.
Members of the Chinese Parents Association spent Friday morning with members of the Assistance League of Flintridge, making friends as they prepared and then devoured delicious dumplings together in honor of Chinese New Year.
“The idea was to come make some friends and speak English,” said Monika Song, a local Realtor who organized the get-together between the longstanding local volunteers and their new Chinese neighbors. “And now [ALF members] are recruiting these ladies to work for the Assistance League!”
If a beautiful friendship blooms, it’ll have begun over a meal of 600 beef, pork and vegetarian dumplings.
Morton said that ALF, which operated the Bargain Box thrift shop at its headquarters on Oakwood Avenue, could use staff there to assist Chinese-speaking customers.
“The ladies want to become a part of the community,” Morton said. “So one of the ways they thought they could do that was by introducing us to their food — which, of course, we love! We want to embrace everyone, and food is the perfect way.”
