LCPC Hosting New Class on Prayer and Christian Mystics

Janna Gosselin

Back for a fourth summer, Janna Gosselin will teach a five-week lecture series titled “Deepening Your Prayer Life, Learning From the Christian Mystics” in the Family Life Center at La Cañada Presbyterian Church starting on Wednesday evening, July 26, and continuing every Wednesday evening through Aug. 23. The classes meet from 7-8:30 p.m. and are free. The public is welcome to attend individual sessions or the full series.
This summer, Shelley Irvine, LCPC’s director of Spiritual Formation and Equipping, will lead a special prayer practice segment. The classes will focus on particular prayer practices of the Christian mystics, ranging from the Orthodox practice of the Jesus Prayer to Teresa of Avila’s Prayer of Quiet to means of praying with the body as well as ways of praying with images. The hope is that the classes, together with the practice segment, will help students to enter into deep, spiritual prayer to better connect with God and allow for transformation of their lives.
Gosselin and Irvine are members of LCPC and long-time students of the mystics. A professor at the New Theological Seminary of the West and adjunct professor at Fuller Theological seminary, Gosselin holds a doctorate’s from USC, having written her dissertation on the Christian mystic Julian of Norwich, and a master’s degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Irvine is a retreat leader, teacher and certified spiritual director who has written curriculum, study guides and retreat resources.
