Flintridge Sacred Heart Honored for 90 years of Service

First published in the June 30 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy recently concluded its 90th year educating young women in La Cañada Flintridge, and the city celebrated one of its beloved institutions with a proclamation commemorating the private, all-girls Catholic school for its anniversary.
Sister Carolyn McCormack, president of FSHA, was on hand for a LCF City Council meeting to receive the honor Tuesday and reminded the community that the school, not her, is celebrating 90 years of service.
“For 90 years, there has been a steady stream of beautiful graduates leaving our school and going out into the world,” McCormack said. “It is such a privilege for us to be in education, and we have such gratitude for the support that the city of La Cañada Flintridge has for us.”
All four of the council members present sans Rick Gunter, who was not at the meeting, thanked McCormack for the contributions to the school. Mike Davitt, whose daughter attended the school, served on the school’s board of directors and got emotional recalling his history with FSHA.
“Our family has a long history with Sacred Heart,” Davitt said. “I’ve been going up the hill for many, many years as a child to listen to piano recitals of sisters.”
Mayor Pro Tem Keith Eich said he was proud to hand the proclamation to McCormack because his daughters attend FSHA’s sports camps every summer.
“It’s just a fantastic thing that you do for our community besides all of the regular things that you do, so thank you,” Eich said. “On behalf of the City Council and our community, we do hereby recognize and congratulate Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy on their 90th anniversary and honor and appreciate their commitment to educating young women to a life of faith, integrity and truth.”
Councilman Jonathan Curtis echoed his colleagues, adding that FSHA has and develops the nicest people in the community.
“I think we all know that in La Cañada, we love our schools — both public and private,” Curtis said. “Flintridge Sacred Heart is one of those special places that focuses on young women, making them strong young women that will be protective of this world.”
