Discovery Is Perfect Pickleball Park

First published in the July 7 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

The Climate Action Plan is alive and well in LCF’s Discovery Park. Opponents fail to see new trees, modern type plantings, retention of green space, picnic tables and the sandbox that are part of the suggestion design including the need for four pickleball courts.
In my opinion, the intended use of the park is to be able to offer pickleball not only for our 3,000 plus senior population but for all La Cañada residents. Any opposition to Discovery Park is a disregard for our seniors. Our seniors want to play this activity because it is a healthy exercise, it is social, and can be competitive.
I am a senior living in LCF for over 35 years, I want to be able to leave my home, travel a short distance and play pickleball. My daughter and husband would benefit from playing in the evening and on weekends as both of them work. Discovery Park is the perfect venue as the only sounds that can be heard are directly related to the freeway. Lighting will accommodate our working residents resulting in full use of a public park never before seen in our city.
In conclusion, a recent quote in a letter to the editor stated there are 37 pickleball courts within eight miles of LCF. Unfortunately, that was a grossly inaccurate statement despite pickleball being the fastest growing activity in the United States for the past two and half years.

This letter is in response to the thoughts of David Boyd re: his objection to pickleball courts at Mayor’s Discovery Park.
La Cañada needs pickleball courts. It is a sport which appeals to all ages, but particularly suited to seniors. I also love trees, and have several around my home, but there doesn’t appear to be a more suitable location.
You cannot and should not expect seniors and busy families to drive several miles to play, as they are currently required to do.
The courts will be part of the park, and there will be plenty of green foliage around them. My husband, who is also retired, has volunteered to plant trees to work toward the overall CAP goals, as he is one of the few who prefers gardening to pickleball. Really, the courts will take up relatively little space, and when you consider the enormous benefit to our families and seniors, the loss of a half dozen trees is a reasonable sacrifice .
If Mr. Boyd and others will join us in a few games, they will see why this addition to Mayor’s Discovery Park is such a benefit to our community.
